Game #5: WarpForce Reactions/Questions

Posted by The Peanut Master on May 21, 2009

The news is out: AE is working on its FIFTH game, entitled WarpForce, and will be released this coming July. The game is based off of AQ’s engine and storyline, and the Devourer Saga of AQ will be the prologue to this new, console-style game. The full details can be found in the official forum post here.

Obviously, with so little information on WarpForce, it’s impossible to make judgments and form opinions on AE’s new installment. However, while AE did release some information on the game (such as it having a one-time upgrade fee, a single-player style of play, and a large one-release-per-month release schedule), so much is still in the dark. Here are my initial questions on what I want to know most about WarpForce:

  • What staff members will the new team consist of?
  • Will new staff members be hired to help with the new game, and will current AQ staff members switch over?
  • Does AE have the resources, finances, and team size to create another full-scale game, only months after the major AdventureQuest Worlds release took place?
  • What will become of AdventureQuest? Will the game stop development completely, will releases slow down, or will they remain the same?
  • Will the game undergo any beta, alpha, or gamma phases like the other AE games have gone through?
  • What kind of game will it be? Will it be the same classic RPG, or something else, like an RTS or MMS?
  • What genre will the game be? (My first impressions: It sounds like a Star Trek, MechQuest sort of feel)
  • Is a fifth game really needed? Couldn’t AE just tack this into the currently existing AdventureQuest if it will continue that storyline?
  • Will it follow the same general path as AE’s other three RPGs (excluding AQWorlds), or will it take a different route?
  • Will the game be a browser, Flash game like AE’s other games or a downloadable game? (The official announcement mentioned it would take a console-style feel, which is why I’m asking this question)
  • While we know the upgrade will be a one-time only fee, but how much will that fee cost?
  • Will the battles be turn-based or real-time?
  • Will the game graphics/animations be similar to AdventureQuest, or have a different feel?

Again, I’m withholding any actual opinion and judgments on WarpForce until much more information is revealed, but as for now, there’s my list of things I’m curious to know. Feel free to add your own thoughts in the comments section.

    * What staff members will the new team consist of?
As a direct sequel, WarpForce is being developed by the same team that develops AdventureQuest. This team will be expanded as necessary on both sides.
    * Will new staff members be hired to help with the new game, and will current AQ staff members switch over?
Above applies to this as well
    * Does AE have the resources, finances, and team size to create another full-scale game, only months after the major AdventureQuest Worlds release took place?
    I have no response here.
    * What will become of AdventureQuest? Will the game stop development completely, will releases slow down, or will they remain the same?

While it is true that the same individuals who are developing AQ will be developing WF, WarpForce is placed in a manner that does not interfere with our ability to do both games. AQ’s development team has become very good at working well ahead. We have content and material ready at times months in advance. AQ has storyline development outlined and, in many cases, plotted well into 2011.

    * Will the game undergo any beta, alpha, or gamma phases like the other AE games have gone through?
AQ guardians will be able to beta test starting on July 3rd.
    * What kind of game will it be? Will it be the same classic RPG, or something else, like an RTS or MMS?
It’s an AE game that uses the AQ engine… I’m gonna guess RPG, with a lot of starship flying minigames or a seperate battle system mixed in. I know I’ve seen an rpg that had a seperate battle system for flying vehicles, but can’t remember what it was at the moment…

    * What genre will the game be? (My first impressions: It sounds like a Star Trek, MechQuest sort of feel)
    I think AQ+MQ = WF.
    * Is a fifth game really needed? Couldn’t AE just tack this into the currently existing AdventureQuest if it will continue that storyline?
I’m guessing AQ is going to focus more on LORE, while WF is a spacey-other planety Mechquest style storyline. Who knows, maybe we will meet the Shadowscythe!
    * Will it follow the same general path as AE’s other three RPGs (excluding AQWorlds), or will it take a different route?
I feel like it will have a little bit more complex battle system than AQ even though it uses that engine. It’ll probably be less linear, much like AQ where the “zones” don’t have a specific order.
    * Will the game be a browser, Flash game like AE’s other games or a downloadable game? (The official announcement mentioned it would take a console-style feel, which is why I’m asking this question)
I think the console feel means it will be a much bigger open world than AQ… You will actually have to find the quests. Perhaps it will have arrow key movement? Only time will tell!
    * While we know the upgrade will be a one-time only fee, but how much will that fee cost?
Seeing how it is AQ based, I’m guessing the fee will be AQ based as well.
    * Will the battles be turn-based or real-time?
I’m gonna assume starship battles would be realtime, outside of ship battles would be turn-based
    * Will the game graphics/animations be similar to AdventureQuest, or have a different feel?
Some images are here. I think it looks pretty similar to AQ graphics, to be honest. http://forums2.battleon.com/f/tm.asp?m=16020236

Pretty sure It’s based off AQ’s system, and to my knowledge there is no way to do realtime in that engine.

Of course, if there’s some realtime in it I won’t be complaining, but eeehhh, I wouldn’t count on it. :p

And they’ve said walk around is not in it, although they could do it if absolutely nessacery.

I agree with more or less the rest though.

I just feel it will not be a very linear game.

Since it’s built on AQ game engine it has to be a flash game.
Also Falerin said on forums that there’s no walkaround included except maybe in some quests.
Mostly just same kind of point and click as AQ.

hmm all, I of course quite enjoy the AE games but i do think that this is a little overboard, seriously couldn’t they have integrated these aspects into AQ and MQ, and found some way to tie it in to DF and AQW?

P.S. This is actually the sixth, if you count ZardWars.

    @Simidorl
Acctually, Seventh if you count Archknight (the original)

  10. Kakarot said

The game will probably be based in MQ and will have the same battles as AQ
someone notify me on what time on the 3rd of july it will come out (UK time)

  11. Actually, the timeline takes place during the AQ area of Lore’s history. It takes place right after the Devourer leaves us, and follows the hero as he/she helps the WarpForce, Queen Pra’Mithia’s fleet, to hunt down and defeat the evil Network. *Breaths* Any questions? 😀
