MechQuest: Analysis of 5/08/09 Release

Posted by The Peanut Master on May 8, 2009

This week’s MechQuest release introduced a new mini-planet, deviating from the Lagos quests we’ve been receiving the last few weeks.

Planet 51

So we head out to talk with some advanced super-geeky scientists who believe they have found the ultimate weapon to defeat the ShadowScythe: Basically a massive nuclear bomb that eliminates everything within a 20,000 mile radius.  But it can’t be this easy, can it? Sure enough, the two dimwit scientists who lift the thing drop it and the weapon explodes right there and then, creating what is known as Planet 51 from the explosion. An alien life form greets us on this strange planet, and he has created somewhat of a game to see how far we can get in this semi-challenge zone. The objective: To defeat four increasing in difficulty enemies with a severe time limit tacked on. Each of the 20 ranks has more difficult enemies. Also, a late AE addition to the release opened up a second challenge possibility: A more even fight against one enemy, and then a dice roll afterwards. The rewards (which unlock at ranks 10 and 20) are an assortment of mid-to-high level energy blade mecha weapons, including revivals of some classics. There were also some new mods released. I won’t spoil the ending, but LOL :). No mecha were released.

Korin really did a great job with this release, as he delved head-first into the strategic land of speed battling. It’s not a matter of *if* you can beat an enemy, but if you can beat multiple ones within a time limit. It’s releases like these that really enhance MechQuest’s battle strategy, and it’s awesome to see. Furthermore, the weapon revivals on Planet 51 were very nice additions. The opening cutscene was just awesome, and the storyline behind the mysterious NPC was both interesting and funny at the same time. Considering how this was sort of a filler week to get more work done on Lagos, Korin and Co. did an admirable job, and I had a lot of fun with this release.

Having said all of that, this release was not without its flaws. There were two important functionality issues with the planet that kept the release down: First, there needs to be some place on the screen where it says what rank you are. Second, an options menu across the bottom of the screen would be much appreciated for being able to quickly swap out setups. (Fixed, thanks AE!) Planet 51 was definitely a very random and out-of-place release, as it doesn’t relate to any other particular ongoing storyline. Its only possible relationship (to the ShadowScythe) ended up being completely irrelevant. Since I was assuming the weapon would somehow backfire, I was also kind of sort of hoping it wouldn’t backfire in such a generic way. Something more original on that front would have added a nice touch, although it’s not the end of the world. (Btw, I was perfectly fine with no mecha release here. We got a revival on Wednesday, and we have had plenty of mecha releases the past few weeks with Lagos and Strider, etc.)

Grade of Release

9.0/10. An enjoyable, fun, and groundbreaking release that was somewhat marred by its randomness and some functionality issues, although that only detracted from the release so much. Korin should be proud of this mini-planet, as should the rest of AE. 🙂

Mother’s Day Mods

An assortment of stat-boosting mods were released in Tek’s Mechs to celebrate Mother’s Day.

I don’t recall MechQuest getting anything last year for Mother’s Day, so this year is definitely a step up from that.

The mods really aren’t that great or intriguing in any way, and while I can understand if AE didn’t have the time for a weapons release, I felt really underwhelmed here.

Grade of Release

6.0/10. Yeah, it wasn’t that great, to be totally honest.

Nova Gems At Ballyhoo

Just wanted to get a quick note in here to make sure people know that Ballyhoo now has a small chance to reward you with a few Nova Gems for watching a video. This was fine by me, as it’s not too much to break the economy (NG prices will not be affected), yet it is sizable enough to get people to start watching who wouldn’t normally do so.

Overall Grade of Release

8.0/10. Planet 51 was a solid, different, and original release that will provide many a player a nice break from the normal storylines and planets. Mother’s Day didn’t go quite so well, but it wasn’t major.

Feel free to to voice your opinions on Planet 51 in the comments section below! 🙂

  1. I feel it important to note that things have changed at the Arena 51. You have the much sought after options menu, with all the bells and whistles it should have. In addition to this, an extra way of ranking up has been added. You know have a chance to get a battle and roll challenge, rather than the standard race to the finish. This helps the higher ranked players have a better chance to rank up.

Anywho, I loved this release. It was a very interesting deviation from the normal releases we generally get, and I personally think it ended perfectly. One of the things that really struck me was the sheer wit and humor of the Droid in the arena. This particular NPC, perhaps since it was… A bit more human 😉 really stuck out as a grand thing. In addition to the awesome cutscenes and challenges, the rewards were also quite nice. A great release!

I admit I started out not liking how it ended, because I assumed it’d tie into the plot somehow, but it isn’t bad persay when you consider warlic was out, and they might not have been able to continue the storyline without him. And the opening cutscene was pretty awesome too. :p

Just finished the release. I enjoyed the new “race” feature and an extra “Mecharoni sized” planet is needed. That said, the new Elemental Ice Blades are no longer Ice element and that makes Tek sad.

Is there a list that I can see listing all of the ranks on this planet? The guy keeps saying that there’s one more challenge left, but he’s never right 😦

While this isn’t a “guide” area, more of a reviewing site, he says “only one more” during the last quarter of the event or so. :p
