MechQuest: Analysis of 11/19/08 Release

Posted by The Peanut Master on November 19, 2008

This week’s minor release introduced a ton of new Starship inventory slots, in addition to a new Star Captain-only level 28 Doom Harvester challenge.

Doom Harvester Level 28 Challenge

Welcome Doom Harvester II, now with a new and improved level 28 challenge version for all those uber players out there. While none of its core mechanics have changed, its base stats and damages have been buffed, and the same extremely frustrating enemy has returned in a more powerful form.

Making a sort of “challenge zone” area in MechQuest that goes beyond K&S was a great idea, and continuing with level 28 was nice, especially to know that AE hadn’t forgotten about it. The Doom Harvester accomplishes one huge task: Being VERY frustrating. Its immense stats get you to miss, dodge, and do lower damage all the time, and it can become incredibly frustrating. While this is bad for us, it is a pro of the release, since it is supposed to be difficult and challenging.

While the Doom Harvester can be a very frustrating and upsetting enemy (due to its crazy stats), as long as you aren’t having terribly bad luck, the Doom Harvester isn’t really the level 28 challenge it’s made out to be. If you have any current level 28 mech, you should easily be able to beat it more times than it can beat you, and considering I got within one turn of beating it with my level 25 Volt Lance, I can’t imagine the ownage it would receive with a level 28 mech. While some people have made quick work of it and others have actually struggled, the overall consenus appears to be that it is actually a very weak challenege enemy, and doesn’t accomplish the purpose of giving level 28 uber players something to really fight for. There’s also that fact that the Doom Harvester doesn’t really use strategy, just a lot of health, a lot of stats, and a lot of specials that don’t really corrolate with each other.

Grade of Release

8.0/10. While nothing was done particularly wrong (the difficulty is questionably easy, but not at all derailing), nothing was done particularly right to improve the Doom Harvester, which results in a relatively “meh” score.

Starship Advancements

Starships finally received an update, with a new second Captain’s Quarters and tons of new slots all over the place for you to place more items.

It was about dang time starship custozimation received an update, and hopefully this will foreshadow future, more content-oriented updates. The tons of new slots really allows players a whole new level of extra customization, as items can now be placed nearly anywhere.

WIth so many slots now, it appears like it is just overcrowded, and if AE wanted to add this many new slots, they should have added more new rooms, instead of overcrowding old ones. Also, I was definitely expecting more than just more item slots. We didn’t get any new items, ability to buy more inventory slots, or any other feature updates.

Grade of Release

8.0/10. Again, AE didn’t really do anything wrong with the release, and the extra slots are definitely much appreciated, but the lack of anything else whatsoever, even for half of a minor release, is slightly disappointing.

Overall Grade of Release

7.5/10. Why not 8? Well, the pure fact that this entire release was Star Captain-only brings the final grade down 0.5, and the rest is pretty obvious. Overall, a pretty average and “whatevs” release, as AE accomplished the bare minimum for what was expected and nothing more. I’m definitely looking forward to Friday, though. It should be fun. 🙂

Enjoy! 🙂

  2. Yeah, althought I’m an SC, this releasse took me all of 3 minutes to look at, and I wasn’t all too impressed. Thought the Shadowscythe war should be nice. Whatever happened to the G.E.A.R.S Games?
