Trinkets: What Happened?

Posted by The Peanut Master on October 14, 2008

Let’s use a virtual time machine (or the Design Notes archives) to go back in time to June 27, 2008 (precisely 80 days ago, or over two and a half months ago), and take a gander at one of the paragraphs of the Design Notes posted by Warlic that day:

“Also, eventually we will be introducing new types of Mecha items called Trinkets. Trinkets are extra slots tn your mecha that can be used for stat buffs and extra effects. The first mecha models that will support trinket slots will be the house mecha. (Note: Trinkets are NOT coming this Wednesday… they do not have a specific release date yet… although I promise they will be coming soon!)”

Trinkets… remember those? Yeah, well, they haven’t been mentioned again by Warlic or any game staff since June 27. Warlic did mention that trinkets would first be seen on house mecha, and while there haven’t been any newer house mechs since the ones mentioned in that Design Notes post, one has to wonder why they haven’t even been uttered since. Let’s dissect this paragraph one sentence at a time, and see if we can find out more about this interesting feature.

Also, eventually we will be introducing new types of Mecha items called Trinkets.
Warlic uses the word “eventually” to give a timetable on when Trinkets will be released. Eventually is a very general word; it can mean any time from tomorrow to a year from tomorrow. Eventually leaves the door open for a lot of extra development time of this concept, but to see that it hasn’t been mentioned for months is a troubling sign, one that might point towards a dropping of the idea. Why? I’ll get to that in a bit. We also learn from this sentence that they are mecha items, which can start to point us in the direction of how they will be implemented. My best guess is if they are put into the game they will be accessed from some kind of side panel off the main battle interface, possibly using the “?” that has been haunting us ever since Gamma launch.

Trinkets are extra slots tn your mecha that can be used for stat buffs and extra effects.
This sentence details more what trinkets are actually going to be, and it is the most detailed Warlic gets about them. We now know that trinkets will be directly related to your mecha battles, and while not major aspects of a battle, will be used for extra stat buffs and other effects. This puts the trinkets idea into perspective that while they will be aspects of a mecha battle, they will be relatively minor ones and will be second in command behind the normal weapons. This does not lower the importance of trinkets and their release, however, as new improvements like this to the combat system don’t come along very often (if ever). Warlic also mentions that they will take up extra slots, and therefore must be in some tangible item format that will take up an item slot.

The first mecha models that will support trinket slots will be the house mecha.
Warlic goes on to discuss the release date a little bit more, mentioning that the house mecha will be the first mecha to support trinkets. As I mentioned above, newer mechs beyond the ones mentioned in this Design Notes post have not been announced (levels 21, 22, 23, and 25), but again, one might have thought Warlic wouldn’t have just completely forgotten about it and neglected discussion of it. Again, it makes us wonder what happened…

(Note: Trinkets are NOT coming this Wednesday… they do not have a specific release date yet… although I promise they will be coming soon!)
This sentence closes out the paragraph and is in parenthesis, which immediately degrades the importance of the sentence; however, it can not be ignored. He immediately rules out trinkets being released that Wednesday (which we of course now know to be true), and also says they do not have a specific release date, but that they are “coming soon”. Not having a specific release date is again very general and could mean any period of time, and while coming soon implies it will be coming sooner rather than later, it is still a very general phrase. Again, one wonders, what happened…

When I read that Design Notes post, I remember being especially excited for these intriguing “trinkets”, as we had never had a major update to the mecha battle system in-game. After the initial hype wore down, most people forgot about it, and now trinkets are more of an afterthought than a curious disappearance from center stage. From dissecting this paragraph in excruciating detail (maybe tooooo much detail, but that’s not the point :P), we learn two things:

1. The basics of what trinkets are and how they are going to work.
While the paragraph was only a few sentences, we do get a very good idea of the general functionality of trinkets and how they are going to work. What made me so excited was that it was something that made sense, something that had potential as a major strategic advancement in the game’s combat system. For it to suddenly vanish from all thoughts is a major disappointment, and I can only hope it will be brought back.

2. The release date for trinkets is very broad and nothing specific was mentioned.
While it has been a long while (too while) since Warlic mentioned trinkets, he made sure to repeat that the project is going to be a long one and the ETR (Estimated Time of Release) is not yet known and could be a while. That is why I still have not ruled out hope that the trinkets idea was scratched. It very well might have been due to obvious coding issues, but because of the long time he said it would take we can’t discard it yet. It has certainly been disheartening to see Warlic not mention it again, but it may be a slow process that he can’t really update us on yet. We may never know.

Anyways, I hope you’ve gotten something out of this investigative post on the mysterious disappearance of trinkets, and let us all pray and hope that trinkets will someday be implemented into the game. Amen. *cheers*

Good, I’m glad I’m not the only one to notice this. I had a small feeling that trinkets my wind up being invented by Selina but I don’t know if that will be the case. I think a thread should be made about it, just be carefull of how you word it.
