MechQuest Suggestion #1: In-Game Tutorial

This post is Part 1 of an ongoing suggestions series of posts for MechQuest, based off of the ideas discussed in this thread. The suggestions, while not taken exactly from the thread, are very much derived from it, and I believe they will greatly improve the game. If you have any comments, suggestions, etc. regarding the suggestions, please feel free to voice them in the Comments section below.

Description of the Idea: An in-game tutorial would be exactly what it’s title suggests: A mandatory tutorial that Tek will lead immediately after creating an account. This tutorial would run through the basics of MechQuest, such as how to walk around the world, how to interact with other NPCs, how access specific aspects of the game, and other such game mechanics nuances. The the tutorial would move on to discuss the battle aspects of the game, explaining everything from the very basics: What mechs are, what weapons are, what the weapon slots are, the important information regarding how a mech and weapon is structured (energy, cooldown, energy regeneration, common special effects, damage, etc.), and hopefully include an interactive walkthrough battle at the end. This would give an overall summary of the game and would completely prepare a player to walk into the world of Lore (starting in the dropship, of course).

Why This Idea Would Benefit MechQuest: This idea could benefit MechQuest in a multitude of ways. First of all, a tutorial would help better prepare all new players for the game, and would severely cut down on the amount of seemingly stupid questions in the Q&A forum. Second of all, to motivate AE, implementing such a feature would greatly increase the popularity of the game by cutting down on all the players who are overwhelmed and confused by some of the more unique and foreign aspects of the game. There are a gigantic amount of level 2 or 3 players who haven’t touched MechQuest since they first created an account, and the odds are most of them were abandoned because they just didn’t know what the heck they were doing. Creating a brief but concise interactive tutorial would not only give new players a better understanding of the game, but also improve the ratio of players who decide to play longer to the players who decide to quit only minutes after account creation.

    It would also be nice if, similar to Sir Jing’s quest in DF, the player received a low level (BA or BS) weapon for free to help them along their quest, such as a used/rusted/refurbished version of the Freshman Laser Pointer.

  2. That would definitely be nice to help get the player a nice head start, instead of starting with the disgraceful Refurbished Machine Gun.

    Well, RMG serves its purpose–killing level 1 enemies with no cooldown. A secondary weapon would be a beautiful start to strategic options…
