AdventureQuest Worlds: Analysis of 12/19/08 Release

Posted by 0rik on December 19, 2008

Today was a humongous release day on AdventureQuest Worlds, including groups, the friends list, and Frostval.

Friends List

About

The friends list allows you to register your friends names ingame. You can access the friends list through the settings menu or by pressing ‘F’. You can add people to your friends list by targeting them and then selecting options.

Pros

You don’t have to attempt to /goto each of your friends on each server each time you get on to check if they are on. You also are alerted if they get on or off, and can also see their level.

Cons

You can only add people if they are on, and you can only have up to 20 friends. Also, random people you don’t know will randomly friend request you. It gets annoying.

Score: 9/10 Friends list has a nearly flawless system, and was a much needed feature. The random friend requests get annoying, and unfortunately there is no way to stop them.

Groups/Parties

About

Groups/Parties allow players to band together and see each others HP/MP. Inviting players through the options menu allows you to create parties.

Pros

Healers can see who they need to heal, and you can go into private (party) instances in some zones. You can also summon party members to the room you are in.

Cons

Because attempting to invite creates a party, even if you are declined, you end up in a party. You can not leave a party if you are the only one in it, making you uninvitable. Also, just like the friends list, people will invite you for no reason. Not as much as the friend requests, though.

Score: 6/10 Parties weren’t really needed. They serve no purpose other then the ones stated above, and having “RICK9X332 wants you to join his party!” pop up on your screen gets annoying after a while.

Frostval

About

Ah, Frostval. Artix Entertainment’s ways to celebrate the holidays. This is AQW’s first Frostval, where you save the village of Frostvale from a money-grubbing sneevil, a frost dragon, snow golems, and a dragonmaster. You also have the option to play the first minigame, a snowball fight.

Pros

The quests don’t have that bad of a storyline, new monsters came out, and 3 new zones as well as TONS of items were introduced, including a new armor. You can find a good amount of the items in shops, for those who don’t like hunting for drops, and those who DO like hunting for drops rather than buying items have a good selection as well. A lot of the enemies are high leveled, but have low HP, making it a great place to get reputation at high levels.

Cons

A good amount of items were member’s only, and one of the zones was member only. Bleh.

Score: 8/10 Even though Frostval had it’s flaws, it still did pretty well. There weren’t too many flaws, and the flaws are outweighed by the overwhelming amount of good things.

Overall Grade of Release: 8/10 There weren’t too many flaws in this release, to be honest. This release had tons of content, the two gameplay features were 100% accessible by non-members, and Frostval gave free-players a fair share of content.

comon a little higher than 8 all online games share this!

  2. I think a key aspect of the Friends List that AE missed was being able to add friends from other servers and also being able to add friends from long distance. I would advise AE adds a feature where if you right-click on a player’s name in the chatbox that you have the option to friend them, without having to be in the same area as them.

I am still unsure on this myself, the friends list and partying that is. But then I seldom play AQW do to the simple fact that the have pretty much turned their backs on the ones that helped test the game. Granted we got the Beta Berserker Armour, but some of the items that where in the Beta Shops, suddenly became members only. I had to sell my cowl of malicious intents do it being members only.

I would also like to see some more armours released for the verified and free AQW servers. At least allow the verified accounts, the ones that helped test AQW in its Alpha and Beta stages to upgrade their armours once.

I also do not like the fact that non members cannot upgrade their weapons higher than primary six.
